The Right Products for Your Hair Type

Does it seem that others can get their hair to have perfect volume, shine, and style? You spend an hour trying to recreate the look, and it just doesn't seem to work out the same. So you try product after product, and soon you find that you have a cupboard of products that don't work. If so, you are not alone! Most people choose their hair product by smell and words. Instead, you need a prescription from your hairdresser. S/he is one who has spent thousands of hours studying what you need and why!

You need to know what hair type you have: fine, medium, or coarse. This will help you determine which shampoo and conditioner are best for you. Now you need to determine if you have thin, medium, or thick hair. This will help you with your styling products. Is my hair curly wavy, straight or so straight that curls will not hold? Looking your best means you have to know what you are.

I have had so many clients with coarse hair tell me that it is fine. Or clients with medium thinking they have thick hair. Their styling products do not work because they are not getting the right product for their hair type.

Here is a simple test to help you figure this out. Fine, thin hair is normally very staticy. It flies away whenever it is clean. If you use too heavy of a product on it, you look scraggly and not finished. Fine, thin hair in a pony tail is normally the size of a dime. If this is you, you need volumizing products, light weight leave-in conditioners, and aerosol hair sprays. You could also benefit from thickening products to plump your cuticle and make your hair appear fuller.

We are going to jump to thick, coarse hair. Asian and Indian hair is super thick, coarse, amazing, strong hair. Shine is easy, but volume and delicate style just never seem to work. A lot of the time, if you grow it out you get neck and head aches if you wear it up. You want moisturizing shampoos and conditioners. You need strong holding gels, pastes, and root lifter. You need the strong, hard hold. This will help you achieve a maintainable style. If you were to throw this into a pony tail, it would be over a quarter size around.

Now, medium hair is more complicated. It is everywhere in between. You can normally wear and do what your style says. Medium hair is normally the easiest to work with. It will do what you say, if you use the correct products.

There is so much more to this; I just gave you a little. Go to your stylist and ask them what they recommend and why. Let them tell you your hair type, and let them make your life easier. You should never spend more than 30 to 45 minutes on your hair, no matter how thick or thin it is. Your hair should only take about 15 to 20 minutes of your day. If it is more, you need to get better product.
